Following their League victory over Colchester the previous week, Brentwood were keen to maintain the momentum with another win over stronger opposition on Saturday.
Starting the match in freezing conditions, both sides looked dangerous on the counter attack.
A superb display of individual skill from Simon Wagstaff earned the home side the lead after 20 minutes.
Stevenage attacked strongly and after Stuart Piper had cleared two shots off the line, capitalised on the last of a flurry of short corners in the final minute of the half.
Early in the second half, the game was marred by the sending off of Rob Cousins, who, despite his protestations, was yellow carded for wrapping his stick across the legs of a Stevenage player.
Down to 10 men, Brentwood increased the pace of their passing and were rewarded when substitute Nick Hull volleyed the ball into the net, having pounced on the rebound off his own shot.
The visitors won a dubious penalty flick late into the half but Stevenage skipper Steve Scholes was unable to beat goalkeeper Paul Johnson.
