Manningtree's oldest resident, Alice Good, died in Foundry Court, on Friday. She was 105.

Originally from Newcastle, Mrs Good was the third in a family of ten children. She left school at 14 and First worked in a wool shop, earning 3s (15p) a week.

In the First World War, she was employed in a munitions factory then became a parlour maid, later working for the YMCA at Catterick, where she was to meet her husband, Ronald Good, while he was stationed there.

They got engaged in 1932 and she moved to Essex to be near Mr Good. They married in Colchester in April 1934 and lived for many years in Wignall Street, Lawford.

Mr Good formed Lawford Scouts in 1947 and Mrs Good used to provide refreshments for the youngsters. She had been a member of Lawford Women's Institute and the Mothers' Union.

For about ten years, Mrs Good lived with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson, near Cambridge, moving to the Colchester Road home about 18 months ago.

Mrs Good celebrated her 105th birthday last May and put her longevity down to "just living an ordinary life". The funeral is at St Mary's Church, Lawford, tomorrow.
