Medals have been presented to troops from Colchester who were among the first to enforce the peace settlement in Kosovo.

Brigadier Peter Wall praised the soldiers from 13 Air Assault Support Regiment RLC after being posted at such short notice.

More than 100 soldiers were sent into Kosovo last June to help keep the peace between two opposing factions, spending a month there.

They were among the first to enter the war-torn province in a bid to uphold the UN peace settlement.

Family and friends gathered at the McMunn Barracks to watch the ceremonial parade.

Brig Wall said he felt both envy and admiration for those involved in the peace-keeping tour.

"With great pride we watched the patrol unfold.

"Of course, it is not over in Kosovo by any means but neither is it yet over in the Falklands and we have played a key part in the proceedings.

"You played a key part in an important chapter of Balkan history."

Two special commendations were also handed out to soldiers who had also gone on the tour.

Major Steve Shirley and Cpl Mick Morley, both of 63 Sqn, were singled out for their actions while in Kosovo.

Corp Morley was responsible for his section, which maintains provisions, passing a major inspection from army officers.

Second Lieutenant Spencer Jackson, a spokesman for the Army, said medals were regularly given out after troops had successfully completed an assignment.

"It is a good chance to reward them and help boost morale," he added.

Three long service medals were also presented to Staff Sgt Popeye Buckley, Sgt Nathan Sykes and Sgt Patrick Cantrill .

The trio were commended for exemplary conduct in 15 year careers which have taken them across the world.
