Police are warning pensioners to be wary of an elderly trickster pretending to know them in order to borrow cash.
Several residents from old people's homes in the town have been approached by a man who engages them in conversation mentioning details about the home they live at as if he is also a resident or has met them.
After a while he says he has left his wallet at home and his legs hurt preventing him from walking back to get it. The old age "con artist" asks them to lend him some money.
The man is described as white, about 5ft 6in tall, stocky build, aged 70-80, clean shaven and with greying hair. He is said to be of smart appearance wearing a trilby hat, a three-quarter length light coloured raincoat and carrying a walking stick.
PC Judy Atkinson said: "He is basically preying on their good nature. These people are lovely people and I don't think they think someone of that age is conning them, so he is a con artist."
Police suspect he may follow people as they leave their homes.
