Three Chelmsford-based athletes travelled to Birmingham to compete in the prestigious Birmingham Games and did so with great success.

Great Britain International Stuart Ohrland competed in the Senior men's high jump at the weekend, and finished joint second in a strong field, after clearing 2.15m.

This was Ohrland's first serious competition after a winter of hard training based at the new facilities at Melbourne Park Athletic Centre.

Stuart is hopeful of improving this after injuries in the 1999 season and also gaining a possible Olympic place.

In the under 20 long jump, Jordan Lau, 16, came an impressive second place against tough opposition.

Despite serious injuries last year, Jordan is aiming to win his second English Schools long jump title, having taken gold as a junior in 1998.

Becky Mitchell competed in under 20 60m and the 200m events over the weekend, by coming fourth in the 60m and running a new personal best of 26.03 in the 200m.

This followed a successful outing the previous weekend in the Midland Counties Open where she finished first in the 60m with a time of 7.89.

Becky is hoping for further success on Saturday, when she competes in the South of England Championships at Bedford.
