Young Emlyn Hann could not read or write when he joined a Basildon school just two terms ago.
Now he has been named writer of the week and an inspiration to his mum who has found the confidence to pick up a book for the first time in her life.
The eight-year-old has stunned both his mum and staff at Greensted Infants School.
He joined the school in Kirby Road, Basildon, after struggling to get by at a different school in the town.
Teachers believe the youngster of Glenmere, Vange, has come on in leaps and bounds - catching up on 19 months of work in just three months.
They are so pleased with his progress that an action plan has been drawn up with the help of his mum Tina, 34.
Mrs Hann said: "Emlyn was scared to go to school in the mornings - the story is so completely different now he is at Greensted."
The school runs its own awards scheme and proud Emlyn has just been named its writer of the week for his story on the new year celebrations.
Mrs Hann added: "I would like to thank the school for its dedication."
