Two people were injured when a pick-up truck left the road, overturned and collided with a tree.

The two men were trapped in the truck's cab and had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters. The cab was so badly damaged it took firefighters about an hour to release the 15-year-old passenger.

Wayne Macklin, of Rectory Road, Rowhedge, suffered suspected fractures to his legs.

The driver, Neil Myall, 19, of Albion Street, Rowhedge, suffered minor cuts to his face and hands and bruising. Both were taken to Colchester General Hospital by ambulance.

The pick-up truck was travelling towards Mersea Road on Berechurch Hall Road, Colchester, when the accident happened at 7.45pm on Saturday.

Firefighter Lloyd Roberts, of Colchester station, said: "It was quite nasty. The truck left the road and hit a tree and the cabin was crushed in on top of the occupants."

PC Martin Bowditch, of Stanway traffic police, said: "Only one vehicle was involved. The truck lost control on a left hand bend, left the carriageway on the right, and turned on to its side before striking a tree."

Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact Stanway traffic police on 01206 762512.
