A man was taken to hospital after apparently trying to cut off his own hand in Dovercourt High Street.
Police said a resident in High Street saw the man in the road harming himself with a serrated knife at 7.45am on Saturday. The man, who was staying at a guest house in the road, was attended to by an ambulance crew who treated him for cuts to his wrists and his neck.
The man was taken to Colchester General Hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, police added.
Police said the man, believed to be 30, has returned to the town and is now living in Cliff Road.
