Colchester United completed two successive victories for the first time in almost a year with their 2-1 win at Notts County.

The unexpected triumph at Meadow Lane on Saturday made it six points from six after the 5-4 thriller against Bristol Rovers a week earlier.

The last time the U's achieved that sort of success was at the start of February last year when Mick Wadsworth led them to wins over Wigan and York at Layer Road.

But current manager Steve Whitton insists there's a long way to go yet before he can afford a smile of satisfaction.

"When we are safe from relegation, then we can start to enjoy ourselves," he said.

But he was clearly heartened by the way his troops soaked up wave after wave of attacks as County rallied in the second-half.

"The lads did everything we asked of them and it was a good, hard-working away performance," said Whitton.

"Their home record is good and we knew we'd be under a lot of pressure but we dealt with it admirably. But to be honest, for all their attacks County didn't create too much and even their goal was a bit of a fluke."

Whitton singled out goalkeeper Simon Brown - who kept United in front with two top-drawer saves - and striker Kelechi Opara for special praise.

Opara, making only his second start of the season, earned a penalty after a mazy run and crossed for Steve McGavin to double the U's lead.

"KK is a good lad, a typical old fashioned bustling centre-forward," added Whitton.

"He's still learning but he's working hard and making good progress. He was positive enough to get in the box for the penalty and he battled well to set up the second for Steve.

"It was the best game Simon's had for us and he's learning all the time as well. I thought he did exceptionally well.

"We've had a specialist coach in to help him with crosses because that's one thing I thought was lacking."

Long-throw specialist Ross Johnson, on loan from Brighton, impressed on his debut at the heart of the defence.

"Ross is a good tackler and he wants to win the ball," enthused the U's boss.

Titus Bramble, also on a month's loan, is currently receiving treatment on his knee injury at Portman Road, but Whitton hopes he will be fit enough to come into the reckoning for the visit of Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow.
