Following a five week break from competitive action, City had a disastrous start to last Sunday's match, as they went behind to a first minute goal.
City equalised on 28 minutes. A flick over the defence by Sarah Gammon found Paula Drane who made no mistake.
On the half hour, Drane scored again when a long ball from Becky Garner found Drane who rode two tackles before driving the ball past the goalkeeper.
Chelmsford went close on several more occasions and on 41 minutes, Drane completed her hat-trick.
In the second half, fine approach play by Chelmsford set Drane up, allowing her to net two more goals in the 68th and 75th minutes to make it 5-1.
On 77 minutes, Claire Hunt did well to keep the ball in play and she supplied a pass to Garner on the edge of the penalty area.
She deceived her marker with good ingenuity, before creating space for herself to volley the ball home.
Angelina Robinson had the final say after she claimed a fine individual goal.
After gaining possession she ran at a packed area and beat off a number of tackles before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the net.
After the early setback, City showed great character in battling back into the game and with their top placed rivals only managing to draw their games, City's result had had a great significance.
Chelmsford City: Bridgeman, Marshall (Blundell), Emmerson, Shirley, Watts, Robinson, Garner, Ramos, Drane, Purdon (Hunt) and Gammon.
