Firefighters took more than eight hours to put out a blaze which swept through a silo containing about 20 tonnes of malt in Witham.
The fire started at about 3.25pm on Monday at Station Malting, Station Road and two engines from Witham attended the scene.
One appliance from Chelmsford was called out 10 minutes later, followed by another two, one from Chelmsford and from South Woodham Ferrers.
Three hose reels and one dry rise were used to control the blaze, and the fire was eventually put out at just before 11.40pm.
