After a break of two years Brentwood's Linda Radford has been recalled to the England table tennis team for a top title clash next month.

She will be hoping to maintain her current fine form when she represent her country in the Welsh Open Championship on Friday and Saturday, February 4 and 5.

Linda then has another crucial tournament in her diary when she flies out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the World Championships which are being held between February 17 and 24.She had to withdraw from competing at the Midlands Open Championship at the weekend in the open women's singles and the final of the women's doubles (partnered by Helen Lower of Staffordshire), owing to injury.

However, she expects to make a full recovery before the Welsh event.

Meanwhile another young Brentwood protege, Hannah Yardy, the current England Junior ranked number five, was an emphatic winner of the band one women's singles at the West Midlands Open National Grand Prix 'Major' Championships at Stratford-upon-Avon over the weekend.

After defeating Rebecca Sparkes (Suffolk) 21-10, 21-17 in the semi-finals, Hannah, 17, had an equally comfortable 21-14, 21-11 win over Clare Newns (Cheshire) in the final.

Hannah also had a good run out in the open women's singles, defeating for a second time Clare Newns in the last 16 before outplaying Siwan Davies (Wales) 21-16, 21-17 in the quarter finals.

However, she then went down 17-21, 12-21 in the semi-finals to the England Junior number two Katy Parker (Lancashire).

In the under 21 women's singles semi-finals, Hannah narrowly lost 21-19, 18-21, 19-21 to Siwan Davies.

Another Brentwood player to take a title was John Whitaker, who is only 17, who scraped through 7-21, 21-10, 23-21 after a bad start against Raymond Lam of Ilford, to win the band four men's singles.

And another Brentwood youngster, Chris Jamieson, 16, beat Matthew Kenney (Yorkshire), an England Junior number 11, ranked one above Jamieson, 21-18, 21-13 to reach the band two men's singles where he was only edged out 21-16, 12-21, 20-22 by Essex's Colin Carslake.

Amy Wright, 15, from Harlow, had a 21-18, 21-18, band three women's singles, semi-finals win over Kate Vickers (Durham), but then found Clair Emmerson (Suffolk) too strong, losing 7-21, 17-21 in the final.

She lost 13-21, 13-21 to Katy Parker (Lancashire) in the open singles quarter-finals).
