Gangs of youths carrying knives and sticks sparked a street battle in Colchester.
Two groups fought each other in front of terrified residents in All Saints' Avenue, Prettygate, at 8pm on Thursday night.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester police, said today: "Some youths were fighting and using weapons which frightened some people who were also on the street."
About six young men were involved in the disturbance although police say no injuries were caused.
Det Sgt Napier said: "I don't think it was anything too serious, but it does frighten people if they see acts of aggression between two groups of youths."
Three men were arrested and taken to Colchester police station in connection with the incident.
They were due to be interviewed today about weapons and criminal damage offences.
