A passing motorist scared off a man with 'bulging eyes' who pushed a woman to the ground last week.

The suspect assaulted the woman as she was walking past the new BAC showroom on Ashton Road, Harold Hill on her way to work, shortly after 6.30pm on Tuesday, January 4.

Walking past roadworks there, the 43-year-old woman was approached by the man and pushed over, falling onto her left hip and bruising it.

A motorist driving past tooted his horn immediately and apparently scared off the suspect, who ran away. His motives are unknown.

The suspect was described as a 6ft black male aged about 24, of stocky build and with bulging eyes. He was wearing a dark jacket, dark trousers and gloves.

Sgt Kevin Barrett said: "We would like the public to be aware there is a mad type of person on the loose. We do not know what the suspect's intentions were for pushing the woman over.

"We would especially like to speak to the motorist who beeped his horn. The motorist's actions were appropriate, as he seemed to scare off the suspect.

"If there any other witnesses could they please come forward and ring 01708 779241."
