A have-a-go hero was injured when he stopped would-be thieves from snatching a woman's handbag.
The man in his 20s went to help the woman who was walking along Chelmsford High Street on Tuesday night.
The attackers then left the woman alone and turned on her rescuer who had to be taken to Broomfield Hospital with facial injuries.
Police are asking the woman to contact them on 01245 491212.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault on a young woman in Southend High Street.
The 20-year-old from Chelmsford was in the town centre in the early hours of Saturday morning when she was attacked by another woman. She received bruising to her hand, stomach and lip.
