True-blue comedian Jim Davidson will be making an unusual appearance - entertaining Essex Conservatives.

The controversial performer, once criticised for his racist and sexist jokes, will be the guest speaker at a posh fundraising dinner.

He will entertain Tories from Braintree, Harwich and Colchester at the joint-constituency event.

Though some members may be a little uneasy at the bold choice, some Tories are looking forward to hearing from the comedian, who currently fronts BBC TV's the Generation Game.

He will be doing away with his blue jokes and adult comedy routines in favour of a speech explaining why he is a Conservative supporter.

More than 300 people are expected to book tickets for the event on January 25 at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club.

Proceeds will swell Essex Conservative party funds. Last year's event featured Tory leader William Hague as guest of honour.

Ian McCord, chairman of Colchester Conservative Association, said: "We expect it to be a popular event and all tickets to be sold.

"Jim is a well-known Conservative supporter. Some may see it as an unusual choice but I am looking forward to hearing about why he is a Conservative and what his views are."
