More volunteer drivers are needed by Braintree community transport social car scheme as it celebrates its first birthday.

Since its launch a year ago, the scheme has grown from five registered users and five volunteer drivers, to a membership of 138 with 14 volunteer drivers.

The volunteers use their own cars to help local residents who are unable to use conventional transport.

Passengers register by paying an annual subscription of £3 then make a contribution to the driver's expenses of 26p per mile within the district boundary and 32 outside.

The scheme also runs two minibuses which are available for use by local voluntary groups.

Braintree District Council community transport co-ordinator Sheila Wright said: "We are really pleased with the way the scheme has taken off over the last 12 months.

"It shows how we have identified a need within the community and responded to it. To develop the scheme further we are now looking for additional volunteers to help us with the work.

"By coming forward and offering your time to drive for our schemes you can really help to make a difference to people's lives."

Car and minibus drivers should be aged between 25 and 70 with a clean driving licence and a few hours each week to spare.

The nationally recognised MiDAS - Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme - certificate is awarded to all drivers who complete the MiDAS course and is valid for two years.
