A pioneering scheme which will see children attend school for breakfast is to be launched at a primary school.
Chase Lane Primary School in Dovercourt is introducing its breakfast club from Monday and will be the first in the area to do so.
The idea is to ensure pupils start the school day on a full stomach - and therefore work more productively.
Headteacher Deborah Carter said: "The scheme is concerned with children not having a full stomach when they come in. A lot of children don't have breakfast for various reasons.
"This will give access to breakfast, especially those children whose parents work."
The school is not making money out of the scheme, which will operate between 8.30am and 8.45am every school day. A range of items from egg and bacon to cereal will be available to children for 50p. Parents will also be allowed to attend.
The club is likely to be the first of many in the town. Government funding was recently given to schools in the town to put towards out-of-hours activities.
