Maldon's first cinema for more than 15 years is one step nearer with the announcement of a provisional opening show.

And organisers have urged people to support the venture to ensure its future.

Maldon Town Council has organised a Saturday morning children's cinema, the town's first of any kind since the closure of The Embassy in the mid 1980s, and hopes to hold the first showing on Saturday, February 19, at the town hall.

Barbara Larkin, town council spokeswoman, said: "This is very much a trial period. If it isn't a success and we only get ten or 15 children using the cinema we won't be putting on any more.

"But if it's a big success we'll hopefully continue in September, after the summer, and continue on a monthly basis."

The council also has four other dates in mind but is awaiting confirmation from the projectionist, Jane Calvert who runs a similar scheme in Great Dunmow, before they are announced but hopes they will monthly up to May.

Aimed at primary and junior school pupils the shows will begin at 10am with cartoons followed by a main feature. There is seating for 148 people.

At present no films have been announced but the council hopes to show major films which have appeared at other cinemas but are not yet available on video.

Susanne Breen, headteacher of St Francis Primary School, said: "I definitely think it's a good idea and I think parents will support it if it's well publicised."

Funding for this project has come from a grant from Maldon District Council for the initial setting up period. It is hoped the project will sustain itself if successful.

Tickets will be £2 each for children and adults.
