A golden sunrise was the focus of a special picture painted to mark the start of the millennium.

Artist Brian Woodcock was on hand to explain his acrylic tribute to Shoebury when it was unveiled at Friars Community Centre by Southend mayor Tony North.

The four foot wide and two foot tall painting was specially commissioned by the community centre's management board to celebrate the arrival of 2000.

It took Mr Woodcock, 61, of Raphael Drive, Shoebury, between 70 and 80 hours.

The painting, started in late August last year, shows well-known local landmarks including St Mary's Church, Shoebury Baptist Church and the Garrison's clock tower.

Mr Woodcock - who has painted with oils since he was 15 - said the idea was to capture the spirit of 2000 and base the painting on scenes of Shoebury.
