One of Britain's top barristers has stepped into an escalating row over a bid to open another casino in Southend.
Legal big gun George Carman QC has been appointed by Westcliff Sporting Club and the Waterfront Casino, both on Western Esplanade, Southend, to stop a third gaming house opening inside the Kursaal.
Mr Carman is renowned in legal circles for his professional prowess and ranks among the top legal eagles in the country.
The hotshot QC recently celebrated victory after representing Harrods boss Mohammed Al Fayed in his much-publicised libel case against shamed cash for questions MP, Neil Hamilton.
Mr Carman will appear at Southend Magistrates Court gaming licensing committee for a five day hearing starting on April 27 this year.
The QC's appointment was revealed at a gaming licensing hearing held yesterday at the court house in Victoria Avenue, Southend.
The committee set a date to decide whether or not London-based London Clubs Ltd could open a casino on the vacant second floor of the Kursaal.
But the Westcliff Casino Group, which owns both the Westcliff Sporting Club and the Waterfront Casino, wants to block the plans.
Southend Council has already given its blessing to the scheme saying the development would be good news for the Kursaal and seafront economy in general.
London Clubs Ltd claims it will create around 150 jobs if the casino opens.
Training would be given to potential croupiers, game inspectors, card room supervisors, cashiers, receptionists, security guards and door staff.
At the April hearing, representations will be made by objectors, the fire service, the police and the Gaming Board for Great Britain.
