Parents and pupils delivered leaflets to residents of Monkwick in Colchester calling on their support at a public meeting to discuss the future of the infants and junior school.

Tony Wood, chairman of the governors at Monkwick Infants School, said he hoped as many people as possible would attend the meeting at the infants school on Wednesday to oppose the merging of the two schools in School Road.

"We don't just want parents or potential parents at the meeting at 7.30pm, but people from all of the community.

"We have got two schools here which have not broken so they don't need fixing."

He said £150,000 had just been spent on a nursery at the infants school, which will not be used but transferred to the junior school if local education authority plans to merge the schools go ahead.
