A second World War veteran once stationed at Wethersfield has written a book charting his varied experiences on battle lines across Europe.

David Powis was based at the Essex camp at the beginning of 1944 as a member of the Devonshire Regiment, also known as the 231 (Malta) Brigade.

He vividly recalls being part of inspection parades in Halstead when the troops were lined up in front of George VI and General Eisenhower.

"We also threw a party for the children of Finchingfield and surrounding villages," said the 80-year-old, who now lives in Hertfordshire.

His war record includes stints in Malta, Egypt, Sicily, Italy and on the Normandy beaches. Mr Powis was also stationed in Harlow and Ugley Green near Saffron Walden.
