On the second day of January in the year 2000, the new Channels' Golf Club captain, Mr Tony Stubbings, put one of his two reserved car parking spaces up for auction for this coming 12 months.
Tony, as club president, already has a parking spot and he decided to auction this on behalf of his chosen charity for the year 2000, and that, the YMCA, the Young Man's Christian Association fund, got off to a marvellous start with the top bid of Paul Bramley's £370, giving Paul the use of this top spot.
Following this bit of excitement, the large crowd of players and spectators proceeded to the putting green to witness the 1999 Captain putt out.
This, Chris Simmons did in a fine two strokes confirming his place as 'Immediate Past Captain' after a successful year as club captain.
Then it was Tony Stubbings's turn to 'Drive In'. His first shot, that was used to find a winner from those who had bought a flag for the Charity Competition that had been running in the Clubhouse, was straight down the middle.
The winner was Keith Otter.
The next two tee shots were to be scrambled for by those waiting down the first fairway.
The first of these, long but right, resulted in two or three running around the base of a tree, and the second played with a short iron meant a sprint for a few.
The winners were Anthony Everitt and Lester Lambert, who with Keith Otter, took home a bottle of whiskey each.
The event raised another £200 towards the Captain's Charity, the YMCA.
