Colchester United's David Greene hasdenied he has handed in a transfer request.
The defender is in dispute with the club after talks on a new contract broke down earlier this week.
A statement issued by the club claimed the player asked for terms which were a "100 per cent improvement on his current deal".
But former Eire Under 21 Greene refuted the claim and said: "I didn't at any stage ask for a transfer but that is what the club are implying with the statement they have put out.
"I am 26 and have a wife and family to support. Our future is very important and it means I have to look after them with the best deal I can possibly get.
"I want to make it clear to the fans I am not being greedy. All I am asking for at the moment is an average Second Division wage and they claim they can't match it.
"The best scenario would be to re-sign for Colchester United but at the moment we are so far apart it isn't going to happen."
Manager Steve Whitton added: "We cannot do anything about the rules which say a player can talk to other clubs but I hope David changes his mind and decides to stay."
