Drivers in Wickford should face New Year misery as major roadworks start on a stretch of worn road on the town's inner relief road.
The road works, which will strengthen and resurface the section of the A132 between Runwell Road roundabout and London Road roundabout, are due to begin on Monday.
Night work will be undertaken in the most difficult areas to minimise disruptions, but because of the scale of the project delays are expected to be unavoidable.
Lane closures and contraflows will be in operation and the exact duration of the work will depend on prevailing weather conditions.
Basildon District Council will carry out the work as agents for Essex County Council.
Chairman of the council's environment committee, Loraine Rossati, said: "As with all major roadworks, the repairs to the Wickford bypass will be a source of frustration for many drivers, especially those who have to travel to and from Wickford regularly.
"However they are essential as the road is in a very poor state and will deteriorate fast if these maintenance works are not performed."
