Tributes today poured in for former MP Sir Bernard Braine, who has died aged 85.
The long-serving Tory sat in the House of Commons for 42 years - first as Billericay MP for five years from 1950, then as member for south-east Essex.
He then took on the role as MP for Castle Point when the constituency was created in 1974 and remained in his seat until he retired in 1992.
Sir Bernard, who lived in residential home Golden Lodge in Thundersley up until his death yesterday, leaves three sons. His wife Kathleen passed away several years ago.
Members of Castle Point's licensing committee held a minute's silence in honour of Sir Bernard before their meeting last night.
He was given the title of Father of the House as the longest serving MP in Parliament.
He was then elevated to the House of Lords where he became known as the Right Hon Lord Braine of Wheatley - one of the ancient parishes of Rayleigh where he has lived for most of his life.
Leading the tributes was Tory councillor Ray Howard, who visited Sir Bernard only three days ago and has known him for 33 years.
He said: "Everyone loved Bernard Braine. He was a true gentleman.
"He was, without a doubt, the most dedicated and devoted constituency member. He was also, by far the longest-serving MP.
"I knew him very well. He taught me one thing and that was to help people and be a good constituency member. I tried to follow his example. The people just loved him because he helped everybody."
Mr Howard said Sir Bernard played a key role during Canvey's flood in 1953.
He added: "He was down here with the people and in Parliament he spoke to ministers pressing for immediate assistance. He had a particular love for Canvey which was just unbelievable."
Labour MP for Castle Point, Christine Butler , said: "I was very sad to hear about Lord Braine's death. I met him on several occasions and found him to be a most charming person.
"Even though he was not of my party, he was quick to congratulate me when I won my seat and offered me any assistance he could.
"I thought that was a very kind gesture. He was dearly loved by many of his constituents when he was the MP and I think many people will be saddened."
Castle Point Tory councillor Mark Howard, member for Benfleet's St James's ward, said: "Sir Bernard was loved by members of all political parties. He was a man of the people and such a loved person. There is no tribute great enough that can be paid to this outstanding man for what he gave to the area."
Teresa Gorman , Tory MP for Billericay, said Sir Bernard had made being a back-bencher a valuable and valued profession.
She said: "The House recognised this when they made him Father of the House."
