A wild-bird expert is searching for the owner of a barn owl blown off course by new year gales.
Phil Eckett, who breeds owls and releases them into the wild, was called out to Wickford by police on New Year's Day after a member of the public spotted the lost bird of prey.
He is currently caring for the bird, thought to be five or six years old, at his Canvey home.
Mr Eckett said: "The owl is feeding fine and he's not injured.
"Perhaps the winds damaged his aviary and he escaped, or he was out flying and just didn't go back. He wasn't starving so I think he was probably only out for a day or two.
"He is probably a pet, because he calmed down when I took him home and he allowed himself to be stroked and cuddled."
Mr Eckett, who also organises owl flying demonstrations at Basildon's Wat Tyler Country Park, said the owl was very distinctive and had a British Bird Council tag on his leg.
He added: "He's a lovely bird and very friendly."
If you can help trace its owner, call Mr Eckett on 0467 427945.
