Detectives have confirmed they were no nearer solving the rape of a 24-year-old in Wivenhoe more than a year after the investigation was launched.
British Transport Police said no-one has been arrested and charged with the crime, despite numerous appeals and lines of inquiry.
The attack happened on November 27, 1998, near the engine shed at Wivenhoe Railway Station.
The victim had earlier been at the Rose and Crown pub with friends but had remained behind when the group left to go to Colchester Arts Centre.
Later two good Samaritans, who gave the victim a lift after the ordeal, came forward and gave police vital clues.
But the attacker has not been brought to justice.
Det Con Alan Reed, of the British Transport Police, said: "The case is still open but there are no further active lines of inquiry.
"The victim is recovering as well as she can from the ordeal. It remains unsolved."
Details have been put on computer to be held long-term in case any new evidence arises.
