Police today warned people to be wary of sellers offering cheap perfume following a raid on a Wickford chemist.

About £2,000 of scent was stolen from Supersave, in the Ladygate Centre, after thieves smashed a window with a brick to break inside.

PC Geoff Whiter, Wickford police's community liaison officer, said: "It's highly likely the perfumes have been stolen by someone who plans to sell them off cheap in the run-up to Christmas.

"CCTV is operational in the centre and we will be checking the video tapes."

About 50 bottles of Calvin Klein, Boss and Eternity scents were taken on Monday night. Shop manager Ian Setter said: "It was high-class brands which were stolen and I expect they have already been sold on.

"Our entire stock of perfume was stolen, but nothing else was taken. It's come as quite a blow to the company."
