Two children and three adults were taken to hospital after a two-vehicle smash on the A120.
Nora Nunn, 68, of Elsenham, near Stansted, had a head injury and was cut free from the wreckage of her Citroen ZX by firefighters.
Her passenger David Nunn, 70, was not trapped but he was also taken to Colchester General Hospital.
Youngsters Dannie and Katie Pearce, of Wethersfield, were travelling in a Rover car driven by Ronald King.
Nine-year-old Dannie suffered a neck injury. Katie, ten, had stomach injuries.
Mr King, 67, of High Woods, Colchester, had chest injuries and is "comfortable" at Colchester General Hospital.
It is understood none of the injuries are life-threatening.
The accident happened near the Red Lion pub at Marks Tey at 12.40pm yesterday.
