Playing up a division, Guy McKenzie turned in two good performances for Hatfield Peverel B in division three of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by taking two singles against both ECC F and Baddow Village C.
However, McKenzie's excellent win over ECC's Peter Lewington was not enough to prevent his side slipping to a 6-4 defeat as Roy Hatfield took his three singles with ease but with Malcolm Jacobs putting Baddow to the sword Peverel just got home 6-4.
Danbury E are the division's in-form side and they scraped home 6-4 against ECC E, although none of their players could get the better of Peter Layzell.
Divisional leaders OCs B were pegged back by ECC F in a 5-5 draw with John Darling recording excellent wins over Robbie Burton and Ashton Parker.
It was left to Trevor Palmer to steady the ship for OCs with three singles successes, all achieved over three ends.
Fast improving Barry Mays made an excellent first division appearance against Baddow Village A and he joined Peter Ballard and Tom Elder in taking a clean-sweep of the singles as Maldon A hammered Baddow 9-1.
Baddow then put this setback behind them and scored a vital 6-4 win over Hatfield Peverel A.
Jon Hill produced his best play of the campaign with three singles successes.
Hatfield Peverel were also more successful in their next game and did well to draw with Billericay.
Peter Brownlow took his three singles which included a 21-14, 21-18 win over Ray Murray.
Fellow strugglers EEV A lost 9-1 to Rawreth A, EEV's only success being a win for Pip French over Rob Harris.
Danbury A showed no mercy to their B team, by beating them 9-1, but they effectively waved goodbye to the title by conceding to Boreham.
Maldon A managed stay fourth after securing a vital 6-4 win over Billericay.
Brian Cole turned in his best performance of the season with two wins butTom Elder turned the match in Maldon's favour by beating both Cole and Rand.
