An ambitious plan for a visual arts centre in south Essex has struck a chord in the county, according to the man behind the scheme.
Vin Harrop, from Rosslyn Road, Billericay, has received nearly 100 responses from businesses to his proposals for an Essex Gallery.
He is now writing to the chief executives of 14 district councils including Basildon, Southend, Rochford, Braintree and Brentwood.
Mr Harrop said: "I have heard from quite a number of businesses and I have not heard one dissenting voice.
"I am now putting letters in the post to the 14 chief executives to get their views and to say that I have had a successful response from businesses in the county. I have also had numerous phone calls and letters from people offering their support."
He added: "A lot of businesses say they have financial problems and there is not hoards of money. But I have not asked for money - I have asked to get their opinions on such a scheme.
Mr Harrop developed passionate views on the arts during his time as manager of the Basildon Towngate Theatre between 1968 and 1972. Since then he has worked for the BBC and the British Film Institute.
The project aims to dispel negative images of Essex in a single building designed to cater for the shortage of gallery and exhibition space.
Mr Harrop said: "I seem to have hit a chord. People have said you are absolutely right, it is time we put Essex on the map."
After he receives responses from district councils, Mr Harrop will approach Essex County Council in January to try and commission a feasibility study.
He said: "If the county council agreed to this it would be wonderful news to kickstart the millennium - it would make my new year."
Steve Downey, visual and media arts officer for Essex County Council, said Mr Harrop's idea was of great interest.
He said: "I have not been in contact with Mr Harrop but I would definitely welcome such plans. There is a dearth of good exhibition space in the county.
"We really have no major venue apart from in Colchester and are always looking to support such projects. I am keen to discuss such a venture."
Ideas welcomed - Vin Harrop
