Ipswich boss George Burley is refusing to let the enforced absence of defender Gary Croft affect his preparations for tonight's (Monday) FA Cup tie.

Burley's plans for the third round match against Southampton were left in chaos when the Town defender was sentenced to four months in prison.

Croft, who pleaded guilty on Friday to a string of motoring charges, is unlikely to appeal against the length of the sentence and is expected to be released in eight weeks' time.

The former Blackburn and Grimsby full-back has been in exceptional form in recent weeks but his absence means Burley will have to shuffle the pack.

The Town chief said: "Losing Gary from the squad at this stage of the season is a big blow for everyone at the club.

"Since the charges were levelled against him Gary has shown the right attitude and has been a model professional both on and off the field.

"He is intent on repaying the faith that I and the club have placed in him and proving to be an outstanding player for Ipswich Town."

Croft's absence means Fabian Wilnis could return to the side at right wing-back.

The alternative would see Mick Stockwell dropping back and Jermaine Wright, who has impressed in recent subsititute appearances, returning in midfield.

But Town are likely to find Southampton to be the toughest opposition they have faced this season. Despite their lowly Premiership position, Dave Jones's side is packed with experience.

Wales manager Mark Hughes is a regular in Saints side and he is set to return from suspension to play a key role in midfield.

Saints veteran Francis Benali returns to the starting line-up but there is unlikely to be a place for Matthew Le Tissier.
