Outraged mum Alexandra Hipsey has urged motorists to look out for cyclists after her son was almost run down.

Quick-thinking Matthew Hipsey jumped from his bike as he was cut up by a motorist turning a corner in front of him.

The driver - who drove over the bike - stopped to ask the 14-year-old if was all right before he set off and ran over the bike a second time.

Mrs Hipsey, 43, of Burnham Road, Leigh, said: "I'm so lucky I have a bike out of action and not a son."

The incident happened in the evening as Matthew cycled with two friends along Eastwood Road North, Leigh, to an army cadets meeting.

The group of cyclists - all with lights on - were heading straight ahead along the road and past The Fairway junction.

But as Matthew reached the traffic lights, a red Nissan came up alongside and turned right across his path.

The incident left Matthew's bike - which he uses to get to the Deanes School, Thundersley, and for his paper round - with a buckled chassis, two buckled wheels and a broken seat.

The teenager was not seriously hurt in the accident but missed a day from school because of the shock.

Mrs Hipsey said: "I'm so incensed that somebody could do this with a child involved. To leave a child in this situation and just ask him 'are you all right son' is disgusting.

"And then he drove off over the bike again."

Mrs Hipsey added: "I must thank the Leigh army cadets for helping Matthew out. They called the police and did a marvellous job."
