A motorcyclist was today lucky to be alive after being flung over the roof of a car in a terrifying road smash.

Despite being dazed and injured, 16-year-old Steven Curtis called for help on his mobile phone as he lay dazed and injured in the road.

The driver of the car involved stopped briefly before driving off into the night.

The accident happened on Sunday evening in Vange Hill Drive, close to its junction with Pitsea High Road.

The dark coloured car's driver is now being hunted by police - as are witnesses to the accident.

Kevin Curtis, Steven's father, said: "He's pretty bashed up but just glad to be alive.

"It could have been so much worse."

Steven was today recovering at home in Rectory Road, Pitsea, mourning the loss of his beloved scooter which was just two weeks old.

Mr Curtis added: "Steven has said that he was flung over the car as it turned a corner in front of him. He hurt his leg and is bruised but was more upset about the damage to his bike."

Steven Curtis was collected by his parents and taken to Basildon police station to report the accident and then to Basildon Hospital.

He declined the services of paramedics who were called to the scene. The incident happened at around 5.10pm.

If you witnessed it or can help, call Laindon traffic police on 01268 541312.
