One of Essex's best known golfing characters has died.

Douglas Parmenter's connection with Colchester Golf Club began in 1935 when he joined his father "Pop" as an assistant greenkeeper at the age of 15.

He later took over from his father and was head professional and greenkeeper until his retirement in 1984. He was then made a life member of the club.

A bachelor, Mr Parmenter lived his entire life less than 50 yards from the club in Bergholt Road. His father was appointed the club's first professional in 1914 and Douglas, already an accomplished player, joined the groundstaff straight from the Boy's High School in Colchester.

For the first two years he spent most of his time helping extend the course from nine to 18 holes, under the direction of former Open champion James Braid. Later he became assistant professional to his father and took over as head pro in 1964.

He died at his home after a short spell in hospital and the funeral will be at Colchester Crematorium on Tuesday at 12.30pm.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Baxter, who, with her husband George, are still active members of the Colchester club, a brother and two other sisters.
