Smoker Darren Moore popped out for a packet of cigarettes - and ended up being jailed for nine months.
Moore, a banned driver, was spotted by police and then stepped on the accelerator to reach speeds of up 80mph in several 30mph zones.
It led to a dramatic chase through Southend in the early hours of the morning, said Sarah Leigh, prosecuting at Basildon Crown Court.
She claimed that 24-year-old Moore, of London Road, Southend, almost lost control of the car on a number of bends.
Miss Leigh went on: "The police found it difficult trying to keep up with Moore.
He went through red lights, drove on the wrong side of the road and came close to colliding with a taxi."
Moore pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, dangerous driving and having no insurance.
His lawyer Simon Samuels pointed out that Moore was previously banned for a year in September, 1998.
He decided to take a chance because he wanted cigarettes and gave way to temptation when he saw his Ford Sierra in the driveway.
Mr Samuels added: "He did not set out to cause problems for other drivers.
"Unfortunately, when the police asked him to stop, he simply panicked."
Moore, who was also banned for a further two years, must take an extended driving test when he gets his licence back.
Judge Peter Thompson told him: "When you are released from prison try to stay away from cars - at least until you have passed your test."
