Chelmsford Ladies lose out
The Chelmsford Golf Club Ladies Silver II team visited West Essex for their last league match with both sides needing a win to take them to the top of the table.
Whichever club held the top position would have meant that on promotion to the Silver I League, that club would have had two Silver I teams in the same League.
After nine holes the match was finely balanced, both sides being up in three games and level in the seventh.
The last four holes at West Essex are both testing and tiring and as befitting the game, five of the matches reached the 18th hole.
Two of these went on to the 19th where the result split with a win apiece.
Of the two games that finished before the 18th, these two had split evenly, making the score even at two matches each.
However, Chelmsford lost out on the remaining three matches going to the 18th, giving a win to West Essex by five matches to two.
The Chelmsford Captain for the Silver II team was Mavis Watkinson and the team comprised Brenda Murray, Helen Underwood, Brenda Parsons, Linda Parrott, Sue May, Pat Vincent and Rita Caton.
The Ladies have also played their competition for the Dixon Rose Bowl, a trophy which was presented in 1934 by J D Dixon as an 18 hole strokeplay competition, limited in handicap to 27.
The winner, with a nett 69, was Nita Lloyd, followed by Rita Caton (nett 71), Hilary Beck (nett 72) and Maureen Quinn (nett 73).
In the Ladies July Medal the winner, with a nett 72, was Diane Robinson, and the runner-up, on countback, was Brenda Murray, on countback from Nita Lloyd and Alison Evans, and Mary Crook (nett 74), on countback from Brenda Parsons, Sue May, Mavis Watkinson and Amanda Colgate.
