Colchester United wrapped up their pre-season friendly programme with a win and a draw in a two-day tournament in Cumbria at the weekend.
Goals from Jason Dozzell and Karl Duguid earned the U's a 2-1 success over former GM Vauxhall Conference rivals Gateshead at Workington's Borough Park ground on Friday night after a long trip to the north.
And a last minute equaliser by last season's leading marksman David Gregory earned Mick Wadsworth's men a fine 1-1 draw against former Football League Fourth Division rivals Workington AFC on Saturday afternoon.
Gateshead, currently operating in the Unibond Northern League, Premier Division, held the U's at 1-1 at half time following a subdued start by Mick Wadsworth's Layer Road men.
But the U's slipped into top gear after the break to deservedly come out on top despite losing Steve Forbes late on with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.
The Gateshead line-up included former Everton and Aston Villa central defender Derek Mountfield and ex-Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City England international striker Paul Stewart.
The U's hit problems within minutes of the start of the match against North West Counties League champions Workington AfC less than 24 hours later.
Strikers Jamie Moralee and Lomana Tresor Lua Lua were both forced to limp out of the action with injuries and then new fullback Joe Keith missed a great chance to shoot the Essex men ahead just before the break.
Things went from bad to worse when the Cumbrians grabbed the lead, but Gregory saved the day and the U's unbeaten record with the equaliser in the dying seconds.
