Charred timbers were all that remained of the roof of the Black Horse pub in Ongar Road, Pilgrim's Hatch on Wednesday morning, after flames ripped through the building overnight.
Sixty firefighters tackled the blaze, which is believed to have been started by an electrical fault at around 8.20pm on Tuesday. One woman was injured in the fire. Owners Bass Leisure Retail say the pub will be shut for at least four months.
