There was a full field of 120 riders for the annual 50 miles time trial promotion, which was staged by the Southend & County Wheelers on the Hatfield Peverel-Galleywood-Stanway course on Sunday.
A star-studded entry meant that times should be fast and with superb weather conditions for the 5.30am start, the spectators were not to be disappointed.
The man on form for the past two months, Michael Hutchinson of Cambridge University CC, ran out an easy winner in 1.43.23 which was over five minutes faster than the next top rider.
Shaftesbury CC's Paul Haxell turned in a great ride of 1.52.44 even though he is suffering with back trouble at the moment.
SCC's 'superfast veteran' Terry Anderson romped around the course in 1.57.55 not only leading the team to a new veterans club record for the distance, but setting up a new veterans club record by over two minutes.
Second counter in the team was the fast improving Tony Hanlon with 2.5.47 and third counter was Lorna Hanlon with a new ladies club record on standard of 2.11.06 and this was also a new East Anglian Veteran Ladies record.
Cathy Reed set up a personal best last week at 25 miles with 14.30 and proceeded to carry on in the same vein this week with a new personal best of 2.16.00.
The winner of the ladies event was Julia Freeman, Easterley RC who lives in Brentwood and her time was probably the ride of the day, beating the majority of the men with a tremendous time of 1.55.24 which took four minutes off her previous best time, on a day when most people were trying to get near to their previous best.
