A boy aged nine has died in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, after a car crash on a country road.
Philip Tilbury, of The Street, Cressing, suffered head injuries when his father's car was involved in a collision with a Rover car in Boars Tye Road, Silver End, on Friday.
Philip, who was in the back of a red Ford Fiesta, was rescued by Witham firefighters and taken to hospital in Chelmsford.
He was transferred to Great Ormond Street but died at the children's hospital on Saturday.
His father, David Tilbury, 56, fractured his pelvis and suffered facial cuts and shock.
He was transferred by ambulance to the London hospital to be with his son and wife Wendy who arrived at the scene of the accident just after it happened.
Mr Tilbury has been moved back to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
The driver of the Rover car, Matthew Grimwood, 20, of Church Road, Kelvedon, was treated for shock in hospital and later discharged.
Peter Clark, who lives close to the scene of the crash and is vice-chairman of Silver End parish council, said the road was a blackspot.
He said: "I know of two serious car accidents in the last 20 years. But when something like this happens action must be taken. I will be asking residents and the parish council."
