Essex athlete Sarah Claxton will find out today whether she has done enough to make Britain's World Championship team.

The Colchester-based competitor finished an agonising third in her favoured long jump event at the AAA Championships - just outside the top two automatic qualifying places.

Claxton started poorly, but running her 100m hurdles heat seemed to bring out the best in her as when she returned to the long jump pit for her final leap she recorded her best distance of 6.30m.

It was good enough for a bronze medal in Birmingham - to go with her silver of two years ago.

British number one and Commonwealth champion Jo Wise showed her class to win with 6.62m, followed by late entrant Denise Lewis with 6.50m.

Lewis, the European heptathlon champion, was returning from injury.

Claxton, 19, said: "I was looking for better but the medal is still good. Even if I don't make the team I'll still be going over to watch and sample the atmosphere."

Claxton also finished sixth in the final of the hurdles with a personal best of 13.59 seconds.

This week Claxton jets out to Gothenburg to compete in the European Under-23 Championships where she is hoping for more medal success in both the long jump and hurdles.
