Colchester Carnival triumphed over adversity, raising £3,000 for charity.
Organisers had feared that the annual event would not go ahead because of new safety and insurance restrictions.
But Saturday night saw about 80 floats and hundreds of people flock to the streets of the town centre.
Organiser Michael Culham said the event had raised about £3,000 for charity. He admitted this was about £1,000 less than 1998 but that had been a record year.
Next year's carnival looks set to be tied in with the popular week-long street arts festival.
