Police have warned that someone could be killed as young motorcyclists use Chelmsford woods and parks as race tracks.

College Wood, by Melbourne Park, Galleywood Common and Admirals Park are the main areas affected.

There is particular concern at College Wood, which is next to a play area, and a police campaign started this week to put the brake on the situation.

It is believed that some of the riders could be using stolen machines.

Acting Inspector Andy Loveridge said: "There seems to be a five-year cycle for these incidents.

"It is a major problem. Someone could be killed. "

And Acting Inspector Lee Davis, who is monitoring the problem in College Wood, said: "We have had numerous complaints from members of the public who are concerned that they are being endangered by the conduct of these motorcyclists.

"There have been some narrow escapes. Motorcyclists are riding up and down a passageway which is a pedestrian access.

"The woods and adjoining fences are being damaged as well."

"We won't tolerate it," said Acting Insp Davis. "It is illegal and, if people are caught, they will be dealt with."

Anyone who sees riders in the woods is are asked to tell police immediately on 01245 490296 or 01245 491212.
