A mini shopping mall could be built in a listed High Street building - boosting jobs for the area.
Planners are set to give the all clear to twelve new shops at the property previously occupied by the Unusual Gift Shop - next to the Co-op store - in Maldon.
The venture could create a number of jobs.
Ribow Properties, run by Maldon man David Bowkett who already owns the site, wants to convert the existing shop to make room for three new ones on the High Street, with a glass covered walkway leading to a courtyard and a further nine behind.
Mr Bowkett has described them as small units with low rent giving people the chance to start up their independent retail business.
If approved by Maldon District Council next Wednesday the decision will have to be confirmed by the Department of Transport, Environment and the Regions because the 16th century timber-framed building is Grade II* listed.
Included in the council officers recommendations are the conditions that a programme of archaeological work is undertaken before any development starts.
Two one-bedroomed flats on the first floor are also included in the plans.
Marion Wells, the town centre manager, had said previously that she thought it was a great idea.
"It will make another alleyway in the town with more independent shops that is going to be interesting for people to explore." This means it is a particularly important building of more than special interest.
The decision will be made by the central area sub-committee of Maldon District Council on Wednesday.
