After a short taste of freedom, Stephen Craske, manager of the Lodge Inn, South Woodham Ferrers, was recalled to jail last week.
He had been released from an earlier prison sentence, but was still subject to recall when he fell foul of the law again by driving while disqualified and uninsured, Chelmsford magistrates were told on Thursday.
Magistrate Kevin Gray told Craske that he would have to serve the four weeks' recall with another sentence of three months consecutive for the driving offences on May 27.
Iris Marr, prosecuting, said that police stopped Craske while he was driving a van in South Woodham Ferrers at 11pm. It was his third offence of driving while disqualified.
Craske apologised to the court, saying that he had been desperate to speak to his partner that night because he had received distressing news.
He drove because he could not reach her by telephone, he said.
