Train bosses are considering linking Wickford and Benfleet as part of plans to take rail travel into the next millennium.
A three-and-a-half mile stretch of new track could be built under the proposals brought forward by transport lobbying groups.
Southend would also be joined with Chelmsford and Stansted Airport and a park and ride scheme set up in Rettendon if the proposals are acted upon.
