Pubs and clubs planning late-night entertainment for the millennium celebrations are being urged to ensure they have the necessary licences.

The Government has announced a change in the drinking laws which will allow licensed premises to serve alcohol throughout the night into January 1.

But this change does not affect entertainment licences, says Thurrock Council.

If no extensions to these licences are granted premises will have to close at their normal time of 2am. Public entertainment licences are needed for music and dancing activities such as discos, concerts and karaoke.

Some pubs, halls and clubs already have licences but not all.

Applications need to be made to licence or extend licences for venues for millennium celebrations and time is running out. There is a legal procedure that need to be followed and a fee of £100 to be paid.

Thurrock Council says people really should apply before September if they are to be sure of getting their licence in time.

The chair of its legal review board, Pearl Betts, said: "I am surprised we have not yet received any applications to extend opening hours.

''I can't imagine there are no places planning to celebrate this very special occasion.

"All licensed premised who may be hosting special millennium night events should apply straight away."
